Originally built as a fortress in 1860, Vladivostok has grown, got a status of porto-franco, accepted thousands of immigrants, businessmen, and just deadbeats, mixing East and West in the small town on the hills of the former powerful Asian empire Manchuria. Captured by bolsheviks in 1922 warmly welcoming free port closed its administrative borders for foreigners as well as for the most of Russians, as it housed a number of secret objects of the Soviet Union.
Today our city is an open port, and a terminus of the Great Transsiberian railroad again, having 17 foreign embassies, being situated on the border with four countries, having sister-cities in different states (for example, San Diego in the USA, Niigata, Akita, Hokkadate in Japan, Dalan in China).
Being a cultural center of the region Vladivostok will impress you with a number of various theaters, mixture of Oriental and European architecture, historical museums, picture galleries, aquarium, and different symbolic of a sea port – the main outpost in the Russian Far East.

Military tour to the biggest guns battery in the world!
«… Over the Voroshilovsky battery there remains a deafening silence. You can hear even the leaves falling…first…second…third… And only pinscher Rem leaving his master rustles with a grass, looking for mice holes…». On May, 1931 USSR Revolutionary Council of War makes the decision about measures to improve defense of Vladivostok. According to it from 1932 to 1934 most concrete, rocky and underground works have been done. Details of towers and cannon barrels were transported to the island on barges. On February, 1, 1934 the installation of the first tower took place, and on April, 1, 1934 – the second one was finished. Since 1934 and up to the present days artillery has been protecting approaches to Vladivostok from seaside.
Officially Voroshilovsky battery was closed down as fighting unit of coastal defense of Pacific fleet on July, 30, 1997. Now it is a museum of the Pacific Fleet. There are markers near the road, with their help it is easy to get to the absolutely confidential object, which Voroshilovsky battery was in the past.
Bird-watching tour
251 km north of Vladivostok lie the unique wetlands of Lake Khanka, one of the few remaining havens for rare and fascinating waterfowl. Lake Khanka is the largest fresh water lake in the Russia Far East. Because marsh areas surround the lake, lake Khanka presents a unique opportunity to observe different species of birds during their seasonal migration. During peak migration times in late March and early April and in October, up 2 million birds visit the Khankaysky Nature Reserve. By number of bird species (330) the reserve holds a leading position among all protected areas similar in size, not only in Russia, but also in Asia and Europe. Most of the species breed in the preserve, while many stop at preserve during seasonal migration.
One of the most remarkable (and endangered) birds of the preserve the crane. All 4 species of crane registered in the preserve are listed in the International Red Data Book. While Hooded Crane (Grus monachus) and Siberian White Cranes (G. Ieucogeranus) can be seen during migration, two other species, white-naped crane (Grus japonensis), nest in the protected area.
One of the most remarkable plant species found in the preserve is the lotus (Nelumbo nucilera komarovil). Its main habitant is South-East Asia and Australia. The blooming of the lotus reaches its peak in middle August. As time goes on, the petals turn from bright pink to almost white.
A visit to Amur tigers
The Amur tiger is brought into the Red Book of Russia. It is represented on the flag of Primorski Region as well as on many heraldic symbols of cities and rural areas.
Also the Amur tiger is represented on the arms of Khabarovsk territory. This rare feline used to be an object of worship of many nationalities in the Far East. In 1988 it was an official talisman of Summer Olympic games in Seoul.
The Amur (Siberian) tiger is the largest of tigers, the male reaches 10 feet long, and have a weight of 400 pounds. You can count about 100 black stripes on its back. This is the unique sign of each individual, the stripes never repeat from one animal to another as fingerprints among people. In the wildlife tiger lives for about 15 – 20 years in comparison with 26 years in captivity.
